How does a contactor (three contacts )differs from a power relay (three change over) ? Which one a cheaper?
Assuming both have contact rating of 10 Amps AC and both need to be self latched through a third contact and coil of both is 12 VDC.The question is which one will be cheaper if just N/O contact are to be closed to power the load when they are activated by supplying 12 VDC to their coils. In both the cases the load is inductive motors.
Yes, as Wingman said here 3 c/o means 3 pole double throw. Is it that the contactors are always Single throw ( N/O) and power relays are Double throw and there lies the difference between them? Pl clarify. And because of this the contactors may be cheaper than power relays if at all they are.
A contactor is a special form of relay-type device intended for switching of large loads.
Contactors are almost exclusively supplied in Form A (normally open) configuration, with between 1 and 4 poles.
Contactors are often fitted with additional auxiliary relays for control and signaling purposes.
Contactors are applied in low voltage (<1000 V) circuits in the range of approximately 5 kW on the low end to greater than 500 kW on the high end.
Contactors are also applied at medium voltage, through about 11-15 kV. When you stand next to them, it is easy to recognize they are vastly different from a 'power relay' that fits in your hand.
"Power" relays are devices that we in the electric power business would consider auxiliary, control, or signal devices. The upper range for these relays is approximately 20 - 40 Amps at 250 Vac, or about 10 kW per pole. More typically, they are rated less than 10 A per pole.
There is some overlap in application between the large power relays and the small contactors.
Since your application is 10 A inductive load, and the control circuit is 12 Vdc, you will probably find a 'power relay' sufficient, but you will probably find it cheaper to use a large one for the 10 A switching and a separate smaller one for the controls (i.e. latch-in) circuit).
